Update on the Jubilee Sports Centre
Submitted by Chris
Some 120 local residents packed into Queens Park Primary School’s hall on Wednesday evening to express their concerns about the closure of the Jubilee Sports Centre. The council wants to merge it and the Moberley Centre, demolishing the Jubilee which will be replaced by housing and building a new centre at the Moberley site.
It transpired they can’t sell off the Moberley site because it’s in Brent and the council there stipulated the land has to be used for social purposes only – not so in Westminster.
None of the councillors responsible for this proposal came along leaving it to officials to explain. They went through the proposals and the consultation which is supposedly taking place. Residents made it clear they thought the decision had been taken and the consultation was a PR exercise.
There was anger that the sports centre with its swimming pool and outdoor basketball court, at the heart of the borough’s poorest ward was going to be shut. There was more anger when it was revealed all of the 43 houses to be built on the site will be high value private homes.
It was pointed out many local schools use it and that teenagers locally often don’t travel because of fear about gang violence. When officials pointed to low daytime usage compared to ones such as that in Victoria there was laughter and people pointed out it was a residential area and their workers used it in their break and after work.
Karen Buck MP and local councillors were there together with the head teacher at Queens Park Primary School.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
If you want to get involved sign the petition to keep Jubilee open and send a letter to the council – flooding them with post might make them take notice.
